A Pico Union Project Documentary Short Film

As a volunteer at The Pico Union Project I was having meaningful, inspiring interactions and I wanted to document them. As a filmmaker, I wanted to reflect the feeling I got from the community. That feeling can’t be summed up in one word but to me it’s about 5 words: joy, revival, resilience, chaos, and truth.

I started to come with a 35mm camera, and then with a video camera, and then with a Cinematographer. I noticed that on any given Friday here, I was seeing more smiles than I saw all week and it was lifting my spirit.

I think trust is the main ingredient in this film. Trust from Jorge, from other participants, and from Craig that I would portray them and the space as they are. Everyone from my Editor, David Robbins, the Cinematographer, Max Magerkurth and our Music Composers Benjamin Jaffe and John Witt added their own flavor along the way and I think it shows as a uniquely beautiful medley much like the soul of The Pico Union Project. I hope you, the audience, feels good about the world after watching. I hope it lifts you.

If you have any questions or comments don’t hesitate to reach out, I’d love to hear your feedback.
